Abstract

This study aimed to gain insights into the association between parental involvement, motivation to learn and academic achievement of students of District Chilas, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Parental involvement is known to impact student success, but there is yet limited research of focal areas from less-researched areas like Chilas. The type of this research is a survey that is classified as quantitative and correlational research. Data was gathered from 209 secondary school students using a structured 39 items questionnaire which consisted of three categories namely parental involvement (15 items), students' motivation (14 items) and students' academic performance (10 items). Cronbach's alpha analysis, descriptive statistics and Pearson Product Moment correlation were used for data analysis in SPSS. Internal consistency of each scale was found to be good with an alpha of .981, .991, and .984, respectively, and .994 for the overall scale. Respondents reported relatively high mean levels of parental involvement (M = 3.97, SD = 1.11), motivation (M = 4.21, SD = 1.09), and academic performance (M = 4.42, SD = 0.90). Parental involvement had a very strong correlation with student's motivation (r = .970, p < .001) as well as their academic performance (r = .947, p < .001), while student's motivation correlated very strongly with academic performance (r = .990, p < .001). This study revealed that the results are in favor of the alternate hypothesis, significantly and positively related to the role of parental involvement and its impacts on students' motivation and achievements at secondary level in District Chilas. The research suggests ways to build a stronger partnership with parents; leverage community awareness of how important parent involvement is to educational success; and establish a more supportive learning environment at home – all as platforms to improve educational results in remote and under-resourced districts.
